Tipping a private driver in France
In France, tipping a private driver is optional. Prices already include service and VAT, and drivers are paid a wage or a fare that does not depend on tips. A tip is a thank-you for a ride that went well, not an expected part of the price as it often is in the United States.
What is customary
There is no fixed rate. Many visitors round up or leave a small amount for a short transfer, and a little more after a full day of driving where the chauffeur helped plan stops or carried a lot of luggage. Nobody will be surprised or offended if you do not tip.
When people often tip
- A long day tour where the driver went beyond the route
- Heavy luggage carried to a villa up a long drive
- A late-night pickup after a delayed flight
- Help with a special request, such as finding a pharmacy
How to tip
Cash in euros, handed to the driver at the end of the ride, is the simplest. If you would rather add it by card, tell us before the ride and we will tell you whether it is possible.
France vs the United States
| France | USA | |
|---|---|---|
| Service in the price | Yes, by law in restaurants (service compris) | Usually not |
| Tip expected | No | Yes |
| Typical gesture | Round up or a small amount | A percentage of the fare |

If you want to tip
A simple guide by situation
None of this is a rule. It reflects what travellers commonly do in France, so you can decide without guessing.
| Situation | What people often do |
|---|---|
| Short transfer, such as the airport to a hotel in Nice | Nothing, or round up the fare |
| Help with heavy luggage, a long villa drive or many bags | A euro or two per heavy bag is a common gesture |
| A long transfer, such as Nice to Saint-Tropez | Round up or leave a small amount if the ride went well |
| A full day tour with a driver who planned stops and waited | A little more, as you might for a private guide |
| A late-night pickup after a long delay | A small thank-you is appreciated, never expected |
| A driver who was late, rude or took a detour | No tip, and tell us so we can put it right |
Travel guides that suggest a figure usually talk about rounding up or leaving up to about 5 percent. That is far below the 15 to 20 percent many North American visitors are used to, and it is still optional.
Why it works this way
Service is already in French prices
In France, the idea of service compris dates back to a 1987 order on how prices are displayed in places that serve food and drink. Menu prices include service, which is why tipping in restaurants is a small extra rather than a large part of the bill.
Private drivers work the same way in practice. A licensed VTC company like Riviera Lounge Van quotes the price before the ride, with VAT, fuel and motorway tolls included, and the driver does not rely on tips to make the fare worthwhile.
Some card terminals in France now suggest a tip percentage on screen. You can skip it: choosing no tip is normal and nobody will mind.
Coming from a different tipping culture?
- From the United States or Canada: you can leave the tipping reflex at home; a few euros is generous
- From the United Kingdom or Ireland: rounding up, as at home, fits French habits well
- From Japan, Korea, Australia or New Zealand: not tipping is perfectly in line with local practice
Whatever you decide, a sincere thank-you in person is always appreciated.
Tipping elsewhere on your trip
Restaurants and cafés
Service is included. Leaving a few coins or rounding up after good service is common, not required.
Hotels
A small tip for a porter or for housekeeping after a long stay is appreciated, never compulsory.
Guides
Visitors often tip a private guide at the end of a tour they enjoyed.
Tipping questions
Is it rude not to tip a driver in France?
No. Tipping is a personal choice and drivers do not expect it.
Should I tip on a pre-paid transfer?
Only if you want to. A pre-paid fare already covers the service in full.
Can I tip in dollars or pounds?
Euros are better: foreign notes cost the driver fees to exchange.
Does a company need to tip on business rides?
No. Business rides are invoiced in full, with VAT, and tips are not part of corporate billing.
The card machine shows a tip screen. Do I have to choose a percentage?
No. You can select no tip and pay the price shown. The suggestion is a feature of the payment terminal, not a rule.
Is VAT included in a Riviera Lounge Van fare?
Yes. Fares are shown with VAT included, along with fuel and motorway tolls.
Is there another way to say thank you?
Yes. A few words about your ride, to us or in an online review once you are home, help a small company more than you might think.
