Villefranche-sur-Mer cruise port guide

At Villefranche-sur-Mer, large cruise ships anchor in the bay and bring passengers ashore by tender boats to the small harbour at the foot of the old town. From the landing, Nice is about 20 to 30 minutes away by road and Monaco about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

How tendering works

  1. Tender ticketsOn many ships you collect a numbered tender ticket on board; ship tours often go first.
  2. The crossingThe boat ride to the harbour is short, but queues on board can take a while on busy mornings.
  3. The landingTenders arrive at the harbour of Villefranche, a short walk from the old town and the road.
  4. The returnThe last tender leaves well before all-aboard; your ship tells you the exact time.

Rough sea can delay or, rarely, cancel tendering. In that case, ships sometimes skip the port. Keep your plans flexible on the morning of arrival.

Getting around from the port

On foot

The old town, the Chapelle Saint-Pierre decorated by Jean Cocteau and the citadel are all walkable from the landing.

By train

The coastal train runs from Villefranche to Nice and to Monaco. Trains are frequent but crowded on cruise days.

By pre-booked car

A private driver waits near the landing and plans the day around your all-aboard time. See private shore excursions.

Other cruise ports nearby

Some ships call at Nice instead, where rules on the largest ships have changed in recent years, or at Cannes, also by tender. Check your itinerary: the port changes how much time you have ashore and how far you are from each sight.

Villefranche port questions

How long does it take to get ashore?

From the moment your tender group is called, plan on a short crossing. The wait before being called can be the longest part on busy mornings.

Is Villefranche worth seeing, or should I go straight to Nice or Monaco?

The old town and the bay are worth an hour on their own. Many visitors see Villefranche at the end of the day, close to the tender.

Can I visit Monaco and Èze in one day from Villefranche?

Yes, it is the most popular combination, and both are close. Leave margin for the return to the tender.

What if I miss the last tender?

Contact the ship’s port agent at once; the ship’s information sheet gives the number. It is your responsibility to rejoin the ship at the next port, which is why planning a margin matters.
